Psalms 85:10
Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed.
Mercy, truth, righteousness, peace – these golden words are counter-cultural and considered inconvenient in our world. But they are poignant reminders of the priceless gifts God gave us through His Son. As imitators of Christ, we’re expected to display these traits. Though they are familiar words in Christian vocabulary, we should not lose our awe of what God has given us.
These divine attributes converge in our salvation. God’s mercy seeks to forgive our transgressions and reconcile us. Though He is self-sufficient in all aspects, in His great love, He chose to reach out to us. His mercy opened the door to eternity. Justice says we deserve hell. But mercy says, “My beloved, come home; you are forgiven!” In Christ, mercy triumphs over judgment (James 2:13).
In today’s moral relativism with no absolute truth, Jesus makes a revolutionary declaration: I am the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). Since He is reliable and trustworthy, we can confidently stake our lives on Him.
Our good intentions and self-righteousness are like filthy rags in His eyes because they are stained by sin (Isaiah 64:6). But thanks be to Christ, we are clothed in His righteousness and so can enter His arms at any moment.
In a world wrecked by wars, job losses, pandemics, inflation, and so on, peace has become a precious commodity. But Jesus offers a peace that can take us through storms, a peace that makes no sense intellectually (Philippians 4:7).
We have received these precious gifts freely, so let us freely give them to others. May our lives reflect the truth of our merciful Saviour, thereby spreading His righteousness and peace in our turbulent world.
