How much do you thirst?

John 4:13,14 – “Jesus said to her, ‘Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.'”

These are the words of Jesus to the Samaritan woman who had come to draw water at the well. Although she was thinking of real water, Jesus was talking about something much deeper than that. We all have this emptiness in our hearts that no amount of friends, parties, earthly relationships, money, gadgets or worldly possessions can fill. While things of the world may satisfy us for a short time, it is only in Christ that we can find lasting satisfaction.

When we thirst for God, He will fill us up without fail. But He can fill us up only to the extent that we are thirsty. If we come to Him expecting only one drop to get through a difficult day, that’s all we’ll get. If we come to him with an empty cup, He will fill us up to the brim to last us a day or two. If we come to him with a big jug – yes, He can fill us up with enough water to keep us going for a week.

But is that sufficient? If we really want to never be thirsty again, we have to remain in God’s presence on a daily basis. We need to be saturated with His love and presence. We need to be so filled with His Spirit that it fills us to the brim and overflows into the lives of those around us. May we not just be takers of the living water, but also allow it to flow through us and bless others who need the touch of Jesus.
