Yahweh (Abba Father) is life. There is no life outside of Him. He is the source and sustainer of life. When He spoke, animal and plant life came into being. When He breathed His breath of life into Adam’s nostrils, man became a living being.
Jesus and the Father are one, therefore, Jesus is also life. ‘In Him was life and the life was the light of men.’ John is trying to say that new life in Christ brings light. New life makes seeing (supernaturally) possible. When we receive Jesus, we receive life. And when we receive life, we receive light.
Before we receive Jesus, we are walking in darkness. We are all dead and blind (spiritually). “The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light…” (Matthew 4:16). That is the condition of mankind. Until we have Christ, we have not passed from death to life (John 5:24). When sin came into the world – in the garden of Eden – it wrapped us in bondage. We became enslaved to the devil and his works. Fast-forward to thousands of years later, light (Jesus) came into our dark world – and the darkness could not ‘overcome it/ comprehend it’.
No matter how bleak our circumstances seem, when we have Jesus – and live in Him – there is hope eternal. Hope of eternal life as an heir to the Kingdom of God. If some of us have not received Jesus, now is a good time to come to Him. Because only through Him can our deadness be replaced with life. Believe on Jesus. Receive Him. And He will be your life – your everlasting joy. (John Piper)
