Psalm 27:11

Teach me Your way, O Lord, and lead me in a smooth path, because of my enemies.

Psalm 27:11-13 is David’s prayer asking God to be his personal guide, especially when facing hostility. David was confident, from his past experiences, that God was his light, salvation, and stronghold. Even when loved ones abandoned him or false witnesses rose against him, he counted on God for protection. David did not expect God to make it easy for him, but believed that he was safe in His presence.

Lighthouses guide ships at sea to navigate safely, stay on course, and avoid possible dangers. Strong winds, turbulent weather, or unseen risks may surround a ship, but the powerful beacon from the lighthouse guides it safely to and from the shore. Similarly, Jesus is our beacon of light, steering us away from seen and unseen enemies.

God was David’s lighthouse, bringing direction and hope in the midst of his adversities. As a neglected son, forgotten sibling, hunted by the king, and now surrounded by enemies, David’s confidence lay in the beacon of God’s presence. He did not fear what his enemies could do to him.

Navigating life with Jesus as our beacon does not make the storms or the dangers disappear. However, through it all, our assurance is that He will carry us safely to shore. We read in God’s Word that He will keep His angels to guard over us, so that we won’t stumble (Psalm 91:11).

Today, if you feel surrounded by many perils and storms, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, your Lighthouse. Only He can dispel the darkness around you and light up your path.
