Psalm 40:2
He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps.
Today’s verse was written by the psalmist David, who experienced a life of extremes — times of triumph followed by seasons of deep distress. He faced rejection, contempt, betrayal, long years of waiting, and constant threats to his life while fleeing from Saul.
But God was with David even during those times. He did not allow him to be destroyed, and He rescued him time and again. Eventually, we see that God firmly established David as a successful king over Israel, enabling him to win countless victories over his enemies.
Do you feel like you’re in a horrible pit with miry clay pulling you down? Do you feel that escape seems impossible? Does the future look uncertain and hazy? Let us be patient and remain faithful to God. Let’s not forget that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He delights in those who put their hope in Him, and He comes to the aid of those who lean on Him for help.
The God who was with David is with us right now. Just as He helped David, He will pull you out of your troubling situations. He will set your feet upon a rock, and establish your steps toward His purpose, for His glory!
As we continue to observe the season of Lent, let’s surrender our circumstances into the Lord’s capable hands. Let’s lean on Him for help and trust that He will bring about His good purposes, even through our difficulties.
