Peace in the Storm

Exodus 14:13-14 (NKJV): And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.

Peace in the midst of the storm, calm in the face of trials. This is the response God is calling us to.

In Exodus 14, after witnessing God’s powerful hand delivering them from the Egyptians, the Israelites’ response was fear, whining and despair. How could they lose their trust in a steadfast God? Instead of holding on to His miracle, they began to grumble.

Lips that once praised Him now spewed accusations and blame. How quickly the tide had turned.

Don’t we often find ourselves doing the same thing – complaining over inconveniences and discomforts? If we only focus on God’s faithfulness in the past, we can face any crisis with holy confidence.

When we’re called to fight uphill battles such as sickness, bleak finances, or a troubled relationship, we respond with panic. Panic weakens our defenses and erodes our trust in God. It causes us to doubt God’s nature and His wondrous works.

In verses 13-14, the Israelites began to panic; they became hostile and despairing. Moses encouraged them to watch the wonderful way God was about to rescue them. When it looked like they were trapped, Moses called upon God, and God intervened. We may not be trapped by an army, but we can feel trapped in our past.

Today, God is calling us to stand by and see His saving power at work. For He will never leave or abandon us. He promises to fight for us through every battle – big or small.

The God who parted the Red Sea is able to part the seas that threaten to drown us. Seas of loneliness, abandonment, suicidal thoughts, poverty – and just about anything that robs our peace. Let’s learn to trust in a God who will fight for us.
