Philippians 3:14
I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Living a Christian life is often described as running a race. Not a quick sprint, but a long, steady marathon that demands endurance and faith. In this verse, Paul paints a vivid picture of determination and focus. He’s not looking back at past failures or even past victories. He sets his gaze forward, pursuing the goal, the prize, the upward call of God with unwavering focus.
This “upward call” is the life God has called us to live in Christ: a life of purpose, holiness, and eternal reward. It’s not about earthly success or recognition but about becoming more like Jesus and fulfilling the mission He has given us.
Paul’s words remind us that spiritual growth requires intentional effort. It’s not passive. It’s a daily choice to press on, even when we’re tired, discouraged, or distracted. The prize is worth it because it’s not just a destination, it’s a relationship with Christ that grows deeper with every step.
What are you pressing toward today? We have all done things we are ashamed of, and we live in the tension of who we have been and who we ought to be because our hope is in Christ. However, we can let go of past guilt and look forward to what God will help us become.
Don’t dwell on your past. Instead, grow in the knowledge of God by concentrating on your relationship with Him. Accept God’s forgiveness, and choose to live each day in faith and obedience. Keep moving forward. The upward call is not just about where you’re going, it’s about who you’re becoming.
Prayer: Lord, help me to press on with purpose. When I feel weary or distracted, remind me of the prize that awaits in You. Strengthen my heart to pursue Your call with passion and perseverance. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
