Psalm 51:17
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart—these, O God, You will not despise.
The man after God’s own heart, the anointed king, had fallen to adultery and, consequently, committed murder (2 Samuel 11-12). But did this draw the final curtain on David’s life journey?
The most notorious incident in David’s life was indeed a turning point for him. Being the mighty king of Israel, David could have easily ignored Prophet Nathan’s confrontation. He could have hushed anyone who challenged his sin. Using his might and accomplishments, he could have regained public confidence. He could have had his way, just like other kings before and after him. However, David admitted his offense and chose to confess his sin in response to Nathan’s rebuke. He reached out to God with a broken spirit, seeking His mercy and forgiveness. That is what truly pleases God.
David knew he was nothing without God. He couldn’t imagine being abandoned by God. He realised he could offer himself before God, even with all his sins. Only God could purify and cleanse him to move ahead.
We have all been there, miserable and broken in sin, bound by shame and guilt. No matter how old or deep our sin is, God never despises a broken and repentant heart. In our weakness, let’s learn from the great King David how to respond in a way that delights God. Be willing to offer yourself in humility to the One who can blot out your transgressions.
Today, run to your Father, fall into His grace. His mercy calls you to rise above your sin. As He draws you closer, know that only He can cleanse and renew your heart with a greater purpose.
