Matthew 6:33 NKJV

“Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

Most shopping websites have a wishlist tool where you can add all the items you’d like to buy but perhaps don’t need right away. Sometimes, we approach God the same way. We have a shopping list of needs and wants – we stress on the important prayer points that we desperately need answered, and then tack on the other minor requests that we wish God would answer.

In today’s verse, we see the Lord Jesus Christ giving us a rather contrasting way to pray and live. He encourages us to seek the Kingdom of God first – prioritizing all that’s important and relevant to our soul and eternal life. A practical example would be praying for a critical promotion at work. Seeking God’s Kingdom first in this situation would mean praying for God’s will to be done, and seeking His wisdom and grace so we can be a shining light for Him in our workplace.

When we set our selfish desires aside and seek God’s will above our own, we’ll find everything we need in Christ Jesus Himself. He will be our immovable rock in the midst of trouble and our eternal reward. When we place God first in our lives, everything else we need will miraculously fall in place.
