Shielded, Shaded and Sheltered

Psalm 121:5-6

The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.

Did you know that during a battle, a shield would most often be held in the left hand? The right hand would generally be the arm holding the sword. This also means that the right side is unprotected and therefore defenceless. That is exactly what the Lord is addressing here.

You will never be left unshielded or exposed by your God. He Himself will be your shelter and your shade. So long as you stay in Him as your fortress, nothing will be able to harm you. The key is putting your trust not in your own talents, achievements, strengths, assets or abilities. It is fully trusting that God Himself is with you.

Being overexposed to the sun can cause a lot of damage. Ironically, the moon also impacts time, tides and even light. But as a child of the Most High, you have nothing to fear! For the Lord thy God is your keeper. He who created the sun and the moon has the power to negate the effects of the same over your life. He makes all things beautiful, in His time. Surrender your life into His Hands and you will see the tides change favourably towards you.

In fact, right hand also denotes “power and favour” in the Bible. Which is why we find “Jesus sitting at the right hand of the Father.” In that sense, our God offers us not just protection but also progression. We are not puny, weak, fearful beings hidden in a cave. We are empowered, bold and marvellous beings purposed to bring His Kingdom to pass here on earth. May we walk like children of the Light. Confident of the One who goes before us and with us!
