Shielded, Not Shaken

Psalm 119:114 NIV

You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in Your word.

When you hear “refuge”, what comes to mind? Perhaps it stirs the image of a heavily fortified place, secure and impenetrable, or a bunker/bomb shelter during war. Whatever comes to mind, we can all agree that a refuge is a place of protection.

To declare God as our refuge is to confess that He shelters us, defends us, and keeps us secure. We flee to Him when fear closes in, lean on His strength in our weakness, and cling to Him when life begins to shake. As our refuge, God is both close at hand and mighty in power.

God surrounds us like a shield, defending us from dangers seen and unseen. Near in presence and strong in power, He becomes a shield for all who trust in Him. When we place our hope in God, we stand unshaken.

This hope rises beyond mere wishing or longing and rests boldly in the promises of God. It fixes its focus on the eternal life found in Christ rather than the shifting promises of this world. It takes root in faith and grows strong through continued trust.

The Word of God is eternal. Cultures shift, seasons fade, but God’s Word endures. In this constantly changing world, we need to cling to His unchanging Word. When shadows of doubt or trial appear, we let His Word light our paths, lead our steps, renew our thoughts, and guide our choices.

In our daily walk, whenever hardship comes, let’s run to God for refuge. He shields us from harm and assures us that we never face our struggles alone. May His Word strengthen our faith and may His promises renew our hope, especially during this Lenten season.

Ephesians 6:16 calls believers to take up the “shield of faith,” which protects them and allows them to withstand the “flaming arrows” of doubt, fear, and temptation
