1 Peter 5:8
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
Have you seen a video of a lion on the prowl? It cautiously stalks its prey, waiting for the right time to pounce and kill. In today’s verse, we are reminded that we have an enemy who’s prowling around like a lion looking for someone to devour. Peter’s advice is that we should shake off our lethargy, pay attention to what’s happening in our spiritual lives, and stay on guard against the devil.
Peter was writing to the early church that possibly endured insult, assault, and persecution because of their faith. The devil may use our suffering to make us feel discouraged and lose faith in the Lord. The only way we can resist the attack of the enemy is by standing firm in the faith (1 Peter 5:9).
God has a way of turning around the evil meant for us into good (Genesis 50:20). Satan wants us to crumble under pressure and walk away from God. He comes to steal, kill and destroy, but Christ came to give us life in abundance (John 10:10). When we’re spiritually alert, we’ll be able to recognise an attack on our faith and cling tightly to the Lord who promises us strength and restoration (1 Peter 5:10).
Are you in a season of suffering that is testing your faith? Remember that those who trust in the Lord will never be put to shame (Romans 10:11). Hold on to Him and the Word He has given you. He will strengthen, sustain, and deliver you.
