The Essence of Prayer

“The Lord is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does. The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on him in truth.” – Psalms 145:17-18 NIV

God is gracious, truthful, and sovereign in all He does and nothing ever surpasses Him. The Psalmist also realised the same thing and thus he exclaimed his praises– ‘The Lord is righteous and faithful in all he does’.

The Scripture quotes, ‘to all who call on him in truth’. But why is us being truthful important to God? Because our Heavenly Father is truthful, and us being truthful reflects His image in us. For the measure of His holiness there can only be one appropriate response— ‘praising Him in truth’. Being truthful thus, is our response in prayer. God pays attention to those who are sincere and honest before Him in prayer. And John 17:17, 3 John 1:4, and Psalms 33:4 echoes the same words.

The Psalmist exhorts us to praise Him in truth and spirit, and encourages us to be truthful in our ways and prayers. As truthfulness is one attribute of God’s holiness, our holiness is also not complete without His truth. The Psalmist thus rightly exclaimed, “Search me, o God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalms 139:23-24).

Let’s hide nothing from Him today and present ourselves openly to Him, for ‘He will never leave us nor forsake us.’ When we come to our Father there is love, grace, favor, and help. He will again lead us along the paths of our life and fill our soul with new songs.
