Then I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me forever, for the good of them and their children after them. Jeremiah 32:39
Our God is a very passionate Father. His agape love for us is incomprehensible. The Father’s love was evident when He did not hesitate to send His only son to die for the world’s sins. And why? So that we could gain a close relationship with the Almighty Father.
God’s covenant people, Jeremiah’s people, had first-hand experience of God’s love, but they rejected Him. The book of Jeremiah is a reminder of the stiffness of God’s children towards their Father. Their hearts were evil, but their lips were fervent; God hates hypocrisy (Proverbs 26:23). Jeremiah’s city faced the consequences of rebelling against God.
We might wonder why a loving God who proclaims that He loves them with everlasting love(Jeremiah 31:3) let the enemies completely destroy the city and drive the people to exile. The simple reason is that the Father was disappointed because His children rejected Him. The neighbouring nations wouldn’t dare to turn away from their gods (Jeremiah 2:11). God waited for their stubborn hearts to repent and return to Him just like the prodigal son’s father waited.
But God always turns things around for the sake of His love. God told Jeremiah to buy land during wartime because He made a promise that the remnant would return to the land. Today, the very existence of the nation of Israel is a testimony of God’s faithfulness.
The misery of Jeremiah’s world was due to the blatant sin around him. We can relate it to our own lives. The Father’s everlasting love is for all of us (1 Timothy 2:4). It’s up to us to never forsake and leave our God because He won’t. Sin could be enticing, but God has the best plan for our future. Bear in mind that no sin can separate us from the love and discipline of our Father! His love lasts for generations!
