The Incomparable Wisdom

For wisdom is better than rubies, and all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her. Proverbs 8:11

Proverbs 8:11 emphasises the incomparable value of wisdom. The author personifies wisdom as a precious treasure that surpasses all material wealth and earthly desires. While rubies were considered one of the most valuable gems in ancient times, wisdom is depicted as even more precious and desirable.

Wisdom is the power of right judgement. Wisdom encompasses not only knowledge and understanding but also discernment, insight, and the ability to make sound decisions. It is a gift from God that enriches every aspect of our lives, guiding us in our relationships, choices, and priorities. It empowers us to navigate life’s challenges with grace and resilience, offering a sense of purpose and direction that transcends worldly success.

Solomon, who was the wealthiest man ever to live, was vastly known for his wisdom. When the Lord God told him to ask for whatever Solomon wanted from Him, he asked for a discerning heart to govern people and to distinguish between right and wrong. The Lord was pleased with his request. There was none equivalent to him among kings during his lifetime.  (1 Kings 3:5–13)

Let us treasure the gift of wisdom and seek it above all else. Learn to cultivate a heart of humility, willingness to learn from God’s Word and the wise counsel of others. We may recognise that true wealth and fulfilment are found in knowing and walking in the ways of the Lord.
