Isaiah 40:31—”They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
There are many instances in the Bible when people were asked to wait on God, such as Exodus 24:12. God told Moses to wait for Him on the mountain and gave him the tablets of stone – law and commandments for the instruction of Israelites, who constantly complained to and doubted Moses.
–we always see a connection between ‘waiting on God’ and a benefit for us, especially on Earth. (Lam 3:25) The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.
— we can own the land with obedience. (Psa 37:34) Wait for the LORD and keep his way, and he will exalt you to inherit the land; …
–we will never be put to shame. (Psa 24:3) Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame; …
And what happens when we wait on Him?
–we won’t lack anything on Earth (1 Cor 1:7) so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
–we will be delivered to have eternal life with God (1 Thess 1:10) and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come. So, this covers life on Earth and life everlasting.
If there are so many plusses, then why do we not wait on God? Being human, our flesh always wants us to try our ways using our mind, our knowledge or our ‘expertise’ as our first resort. If we were dependent of God for our being, we would not let our ego /self take over but be dead to ourself and live through God’s voice. This is what is meant by ‘wait on God’. Don’t use our ways, our mind, our knowledge or our expertise to plan our life. God will provide instructions at His time, the perfect time. Till then all we need to do is to sit at His feet, listen for His voice and wait on Him. God will show us His great plan for our life as the time comes.
In addition, when we rely on ourselves, we will encounter old age, tiredness, slow down of our faculties or even giving up on activities. But if we wait on the Lord; we have His backing of energy and grace to fulfill our purpose, He stands in the gaps of our weaknesses of old age, He launches us to our destination through His grace and through our faith in Him.
