Psalm 41:1 – “Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble.”
This psalm was written by King David during his sickness. Through the course of this psalm, he repents of his sin and pleads with God for healing. But he also complains of his enemies and false friends who gloat over his misery. When we read today’s verse again in this context, we understand the point David was trying to make.
Anyone who considers the poor is blessed by the Lord. If you know someone who is helpless and you are kind to them, God takes note of it. Empathy is a language we all need to be fluent in. When you try to understand the hardships a friend may be going through, it will make you more compassionate and willing to help.
While you may not always be able to alleviate someone’s poverty, you can be generous with the time you spend with them. Just a kind word, a small token of love, or a note of encouragement will do wonders for those who are going through a difficult time. While the recipient of your compassion may not always appreciate your help, the Lord does. And when you go through trouble, the Lord will be by your side to deliver you. Isn’t that an awesome promise?
