Isaiah 61:1: The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
This verse directly refers to our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus read out this verse in Luke 4:17-21 and said “today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” Jesus was empowered with the Holy Spirit to preach the good news of His Kingdom to the meek, to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom to the captives, and also release those who are bound in various prisons of life issues.
During the time of Jesus as well as now, there is not a place where there is sin, hopelessness, slavery to sin, jailed in various prisons or cells like poverty, depression, financial crunch, broken home/relationships, etc. Jesus came to fix all these things and to release those who are weak in the spirit or poor in the spirit. It is the poor people who have no one to help them or intervene on their behalf. It is such people who desperately need help. Poor does not mean just the financial aspects, but it also means poor in all the other aspects of life or being helpless or hopeless. There is hope for this downtrodden society. There is hope for those who are hurt and are hurting. Jesus will heal all kinds of emotional turmoil and breakups and not just the physical touch or healing. He will set free those who are held captive to sin and will release those who are bound in prison. That is what Jesus was doing while He was on this earth. To do that, He needed to be equipped with the power of God through the Holy Spirit.
What is our mission? Our mission is to carry on the work that Jesus left behind. Let us be people who will boldly proclaim this good news and let them know that there is still hope for everyone who trusts in His power and strength.
