Psalm 150:3
Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet; praise Him with the lute and harp!
Psalm 150 is a unique hymn of praise in which every line includes a call to worship the Lord. The psalm significantly celebrates the presence of the King of kings and Lord of lords through music and dancing. It reminds us that worship is not simply singing in God’s presence but acknowledging Him as our Sovereign King.
The trumpet was blown on special occasions such as the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 25:9) and to announce God’s royal rule (Psalm 47:5, Psalm 98:6). The lute and harp were stringed instruments that the Levites used in temple worship (1 Chronicles 15:16). In 2 Chronicles 5:12-14, the fullness of God’s glory overwhelmed the people as they played these instruments and praised the Lord.
The psalmist invites us into the same posture of worship in Psalm 150. When we think of who God is and all that He’s done (Psalm 150:2), we can’t help but erupt in exuberant praise (Psalm 150:5).
Perhaps you’re going through a difficult time, and you’re not able to praise the Lord with all your heart. Even in your hard place, offer a sacrifice of praise that acknowledges God’s sovereignty. Surrender yourself to the Lord and exalt Him above your problems. He is with you in the storm, and He’ll help you through it.
So, as Psalm 150:6 says, let’s praise the Lord as long as we have breath. Our King, who’s on the throne, is also with us. He’s actively working in our lives, and we can trust Him to reign sovereign over our circumstances as well.
