The Truth About Love

Luke 6:31  And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.

The Lord Jesus always took the opportunity to stress on love.

It was the focus of almost every sermon that He preached. Right from the two greatest commandments that revolve around loving God and loving people, to commanding his disciples to treat others as they would want to be treated, the Lord Jesus drilled love into the hearts of people!

It was easy for them to understand the love that He spoke about because He led by example.

When the Pharisees captured the adulterous woman and asked the Lord Jesus if they should stone her to death in keeping with the law of Moses, the Lord Jesus said, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” – John 8:7 (NIV)

In essence, He was telling them to treat the woman as they would want to be treated, because, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23 (NIV)

The Lord Jesus wasn’t one who simply dished out words of wisdom. He applied it to His own life.

When He was on the cross in utmost spiritual, emotional and physical agony, He said, “Father, forgive them” – Luke 23:34 (NIV)

It must have taken a mighty effort just to speak, let alone utter words of such unimaginable love for humanity!

The Lord Jesus also warned us about the consequences of our attitude, when He said, “For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” – Matthew 7:2 (NIV)

Everything boils down to loving your neighbour as yourself! That’s why the Lord Jesus said it was among the greatest commandments.

Can we treat people the way we would want to be treated?
