For the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly. Psalm 84:11
God is concerned with every part of our being: spirit, soul, and body. Often, we take for granted the rain that falls, the sun that comes up every morning, the refreshing winds that blow but all these things are watched over by our loving God in His provision for us. God’s provision also extends to His creation that is deeply dependent on Him (Psalm 104:21).
God is our sun and shield. Like the sun, God provides for us, nourishes us, and is always present. Like a shield, God protects us and gives us security. We can hide behind Him and feel safe. But a shield does no good just by laying nearby. It only protects only when picked up and used appropriately. The same is true with God. If we do not acknowledge Him, if we don’t get to know Him, if we don’t truly depend on Him and walk with Him, we won’t receive the protection, security, and peace that He freely offers us.
The ways God provides for us are beyond anything we can ask or imagine. God’s abounding love is seen on the cross when our Lord Jesus died for us, “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things” (Romans 8:32). God’s love and direction began even before conception. God has been involved in our lives from the very start! He is truly Jehovah-Jireh, the Lord-Who-Provides.
Prayer: Dear God, I thank You that You not only meet the daily, physical needs of my life but You also meet the needs of my soul and spirit, my inner man. Lord, I thank you that you provide your peace, comfort, love, and self-discipline. In whatever physical state I find myself, please help me be content in You. Amen!
