Hebrews 13:5
Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you.
Have you ever felt like others are living a more desirable life than you? At one point, they were just like you. But now, they enjoy good health, a better education, a successful career, fancy cars, a luxury home, an adorable spouse, well-behaved children, and travel the world in business class or private jets, among other things. We often hold ourselves to these high standards and may knowingly or unknowingly covet others’ lives or possessions. Well, if it makes you feel better, you’re not alone; we’ve all been there.
Today’s scripture is a perfect reminder for us! The verse encourages us to be thankful and happy for all the blessings we already have. It also reassures us that our Father has promised not to leave us through thick or thin.
Covetousness often leaves us with dissatisfaction, loneliness, bitterness, and anxiety. Instead of focusing on what we lack, we should look for reasons to appreciate what we have. We should shift our perspective from blaming to blessing, grumbling to gratitude. It may be harder than we think. However, when God is by our side, all we need to have is the willingness to surrender. He will take charge of transforming us into what He intends us to be.
Take a moment today to reflect on the areas in your life that leave you feeling unsatisfied. Write down a few reasons to appreciate those very inadequacies. Before long, you’ll find you have no complaints.
In this brief journey of our lives, we have plenty of reasons to be thankful to God. Let us learn to be content like Paul, in need or plenty (Philippians 4:11-13). God Himself is with us. So, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us!
