Deuteronomy 6:5
You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
As the Israelites stood at the edge of the Promised Land, Moses addressed a new generation after 40 years of wandering in the wilderness. He gave them final instructions for remaining faithful to God. They were about to enter Canaan, a land filled with people who worshipped many pagan gods. Deuteronomy 6:5 follows the declaration that the Lord alone is God and deserves Israel’s complete, undivided devotion.
Moses reminded them that they would inherit houses, vineyards, and prosperity for which they had not worked. As they enjoyed these blessings, he warned them not to forget the Lord who had faithfully provided for them.
The command is simple: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
Heart (Lev) – In Hebrew view, the heart was the center of thinking and decision-making. Loving God with all our hearts means surrendering our minds, thoughts, and choices to Him.
Soul (Nephesh) – Meaning “breath” or “life,” it refers to our entire being. Loving God with all our souls means dedicating our identity, passions, and life to Him.
Strength (Me’od) – Literally meaning “muchness,” it points to our resources, abilities, and possessions. Loving God with all our strength means offering everything we have to Him.
Centuries later, Jesus reaffirmed that God hadn’t changed His standard (Matthew 22:37). Today, we don’t have a thousand different spiritual rules to keep track of, but one mandate from which all our obedience flows. So, let’s examine our lives and answer the one question that truly matters: Does God have all our minds, our lives, and our resources?
