The King Who Comes Lowly

Zechariah 9:9

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey.

The book of Zechariah was written to God’s people after they returned from exile in Babylon. Although they were rebuilding the temple and their lives, they were tired, discouraged, and unsure about the future. Through visions and promises, Zechariah reminded them that God had not forgotten them.

Israel was small, surrounded by powerful nations, and awaiting deliverance. They expected a strong military ruler who would overthrow their enemies. Instead, God gives them a surprising picture of their King.

Notice that first phrase: Your King is coming to you. They did not have to find Him, impress Him, or earn Him. God was sending their King toward them. He is just and having salvation. Righteous, trustworthy, able to save. But also lowly, riding on a donkey.

This is not a war horse entrance. This is humility. In those days, kings rode horses in battle, but a donkey symbolized peace. Therefore, God’s promised King would not arrive with intimidation but with gentleness. We see this beautifully fulfilled when Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey. Power wrapped in humility. Authority clothed in peace.

For us today, this verse reminds us that God often works differently than we expect. While we look for dramatic breakthroughs, He comes quietly. When we want force, He brings peace. As we seek control, He offers salvation.

In these final days of Lent, let us take time to notice the quiet, humble ways our King draws near. He still comes to us, in our ordinary routines, in our prayers, in the middle of unfinished plans. The question is not whether He comes, but whether we are willing to rejoice and welcome Him as He is.

What kind of King are you expecting in your life right now? Are you ready to receive the One who comes in humility?
