James 1:5
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
Biblical wisdom begins with a reverential fear of God (Proverbs 9:10). Wisdom from God gives us a heart of understanding, not just to discern between good and evil, but also between good and God’s best.
As believers, we do not have to grope around in the dark, hoping to stumble upon answers. God is willing to guide us, but on the condition of a humble heart that recognises its dire need for His wisdom.
One hindrance to receiving God’s wisdom is wrong motives (James 4:3). God will not give us the gift of discernment if we intend to judge and criticise others. Our intentions have to be God-led, to intercede and bless others. When God gives wisdom, He gives it liberally and generously without lack. There will be no blame, shame or criticism.
But how can we distinguish godly wisdom from earthly wisdom? Wisdom from above will always be pure, filled with peace, gentle, merciful, humble, and impartial without hypocrisy (James 3:17). But earthly wisdom is unspiritual, demonic, filled with envy, selfish ambition, corruption, boasting, and bitterness (James 3:15-16).
God’s wisdom plays a critical role in how we handle trials. When storms hit hard, His wisdom gives us a spiritual perspective on the purpose of our struggles. It gives us hope that we’ll endure with the joy of the Lord, and a deep assurance that His masterpiece is under construction!
Therefore, let us ask the Holy Spirit to help us operate in God’s wisdom and recognise His voice above the noise of the world. Let us humbly surrender to His guidance.
Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you (Proverbs 4:6 NIV).
