James 4:8
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Our relationship with God is never about a distant tyrant waiting for us to achieve perfection; rather, it is about a Father waiting for a single step of intentionality. Today’s verse reminds us of the gift of free will. God is a gentleman. He invites, but He does not force. The first step is ours to take, serving as a daily exercise of the choice He granted us.
Whether you feel miles away or closer than ever, there is no ceiling to intimacy with God. He is limitless. Every day and every night offer a fresh depth of experience and a richness of His presence. However, the verse reminds us that proximity requires preparation: cleansing our hands and purifying our hearts. This isn’t about a cleansing ritual or trying to earn a seat at the table. Instead, cleansing is an act of worship.
To cleanse our hands is to be mindful of our external work and how we treat others at the office, on campus, or even in our homes. To purify our hearts is to audit our internal intentions, ensuring our secret thoughts reflect the same love we profess outwardly.
We must reject double-mindedness, where we keep one foot in our old habits and one in God’s kingdom. And when we inevitably feel the weight of our own mess, we don’t hide. We rely on His blood to wash us clean. A single, genuine cry for help is enough to bridge the gap, as His grace and love sustain the rest of our journey.
