Isaiah 32:17
The work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever.
In this scripture, the prophet Isaiah speaks of the effect of living in righteousness and aligning our lives with God’s will. The Beatitudes (Mathew 5) also speak of being blessed when we live in righteousness.
What is righteousness? Is it simply a set of religious rules? No! Righteousness is being in right standing with God. We have been made righteous through the obedience of Jesus (Romans 5:19). We receive it by faith (Philippians 3:9) when we repent of our sins and surrender our lives to the lordship of Jesus.
‘Tsedaqah’ in Hebrew means righteousness – moral rectitude, justice, complete conformity to God’s divine standard. It’s not perfectionism, but about living in right alignment and relationship with God and others. The continuous work of the Holy Spirit in our surrendered lives enables us to live righteously and experience the fruit of God’s peace that quiets the soul.
‘Shalom’ in Hebrew means peace – wholeness, completeness, safety, comprehensive physical and spiritual wellbeing. It springs from a clean heart, a clear conscience, and a life in line with God’s purpose – seeking truth, walking in love, and bringing healing and stability to relationships and communities.
Quietness isn’t silence. Where the world has ample noise and anxiety, righteousness provides a divine calm that anchors the soul (John 14:27). ‘Shaqat’ in Hebrew means quietness – an inner tranquillity, being completely undisturbed. It’s not laziness or inactivity, but the absence of inner turmoil, panic, and anxiety.
Assurance forever refers to the hope and security we have in a faithful, never-changing God and His promises. No fear, no uncertainty.
When we receive salvation through Christ, the Holy Spirit begins His transforming work in our hearts, producing righteousness, peace, and eternal assurance.
