Psalm 150:4
Praise Him with the timbrel and dance; praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!
Too often, we think of worship as something queit and reserved. We sit in rows, listen to the music, or sing along with others. But Psalm 150:4 reminds us that worship can be much more than that. It invites us to respond to God’s goodness with our whole heart and life.
When the psalmist speaks about the tambourine and dance, he invites us to celebrate. In ancient Israel, people often danced after a great victory or to celebrate a good harvest. They expressed their joy wholeheartedly.
God does not ask us to worship perfectly. Instead, He desires that we respond to His grace with a thankful heart. The verse also mentions stringed instruments and flutes, showing us that people can worship God in different ways. Some may praise Him through joyful music and singing, while others may express their worship through quiet prayer. God welcomes sincere worship in all its different forms.
Our bodies and our lives can also become expressions of worship. So, when you think about how good God has been to you, don’t hesitate to express your gratitude. Let your heart respond to Him with joy, praise, and thanksgiving.
The psalmist tells us where the Lord is to be praised – in the sanctuary. Why do we praise him? We praise Him for His mighty acts and excellent greatness. How do we praise Him? With the trumpet, lute, harp, timbrel, dance, loud cymbals and clashing cymbals. And who is to sing His praise? Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!
