Knowing our Good Shepherd

Psalm 23:3

He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

One of the most beloved psalms was written by David, the former shepherd who became Israel’s greatest king. While his older brothers served in important roles in King Saul’s army, David performed the humble task of a hired hand: caring for sheep.

A shepherd’s calling is simple yet demanding: to protect and provide. Sheep are not exactly known for their intelligence. They wander off easily, fall prey to wild animals, and can be difficult to manage. A hired hand may flee at the first hint of danger. But a true shepherd is willing to lay down his life for the flock. Our God is that good Shepherd!

The good shepherd leads, restores, and promotes the sheep in his fold. We may imagine ourselves to be wiser than Solomon (1 Kings 4:29–34), yet in truth we are much like sheep. Without God directing our steps, we drift toward danger. Psalm 23 reminds us that the Lord Himself is our good Shepherd.

The psalm also reveals a transformative shift. It begins with knowing about God: “The Lord is my shepherd” (v. 1), “He leads me” (v. 3). The psalm then shifts into knowing God personally: “You are with me” (v. 4), “You anoint my head with oil” (v. 5). As His sheep, this should be our journey: from distant knowledge of the Shepherd to intimate relationship with Him. As He leads us in paths of righteousness, He draws us deeper into knowing Him.

Today, allow the good Shepherd to restore your soul and lead you in His righteous paths. Even when enemies surround you, He prepares a table before you, nurturing and honoring you as you walk faithfully with Him.
