Psalm 42:8
The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night His song shall be with me — a prayer to the God of my life.
Life has a way of throwing a mix of good days and tough nights at us. In Psalm 42:8, the writer is going through a really hard time, but he reminds himself of something beautiful: God is with us around the clock.
During the day, God actively sends His love our way through small, timely blessings. A friend calling right when you feel lonely, or getting an unexpected burst of energy when you’re exhausted. That’s God watching over you in the middle of your busy schedule.
But what about the night, when the house gets quiet, and your mind starts racing with worry? Today’s verse says God gives us a “song” in the night.
The Bible shows the ultimate example in Paul and Silas. Authorities arrested them, beat them up severely, threw them into the deepest, darkest part of the prison, and locked their feet in stocks. It was a literal and emotional midnight for them. Their bodies were aching, and their future was uncertain. Yet they chose to pray and sing hymns to God in the dark, rather than panic.
Like Paul and Silas, you might feel trapped in your own night. You may be stressing out, feeling the weight of bills, or fighting an illness. Yet in those moments, a comforting scripture or an old worship song suddenly comes to mind and brings instant peace. God puts a song in your heart that can break the chains of fear and anxiety.
No matter what you are facing today, God is in control of your brightest days and holds your hand through the darkest nights.
