Genesis 1:26: And God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
God created man in His image and His likeness. He wanted man to have dominion over every living creatures, both of the sea as well as of the air. He made man to have authority over everything that He owned.
Dominion means dominance or power through legal authority. God had empowered Adam to have control or dominance over every other living creatures. He lost it when Eve and he disobeyed God. The whole purpose of why God created them was destroyed through disobedience and sin, but praise be to Jesus who has defeated the devil on the cross and restored the authority back to everyone who believes in Him. Had Adam and Eve chosen to refuse to listen to the devil, the world would have been a better place to live. One man sinned and death entered the world through that one man. That sin was so terrible that it cut him off from God, his spirit died and with his spiritual death, he lost the authority and dominion that God gave him. Can you ever imagine a man who once played with all kinds of animals later had to run and hide from them, and are still hiding today for fear of death? Well, this was not the kind of life that God intended for man.
God wants us to pick up that which we lost. He has restored by His death everything that man had once lost, dominion, influence, power, knowledge of the power that had been vested in us, etc. It is up to us to pick up everything and operate in the power of God in all areas of our life, be it material or spiritual.
