Lamentations 3:31-32
“The Lord will not cast off forever. Though He causes grief, yet He will show compassion according to the multitude of His mercies.”
The book of Lamentations is a collection of heartfelt poems written by the prophet Jeremiah. He is grieving the destruction of Jerusalem and the suffering of his people. In the middle of this sorrow, Jeremiah reminds them—and us—of a deep truth about God: “The Lord will not cast off forever. Though He causes grief, yet He will show compassion according to the multitude of His mercies.”
Jeremiah is speaking to a broken, devastated people. They had sinned, turned away from God, and were facing the consequences. Yet Jeremiah doesn’t leave them in despair. He reminds them that even though there is pain now, it won’t last forever. God’s discipline is real, but His mercy is greater. His compassion is not limited. His love doesn’t run out.
This verse reminds us that grief, loss, and hardship—even when they feel endless—are not the final word. God may allow seasons of sorrow, but He never abandons us. His heart is always turned toward restoration.
In today’s world, we may feel cast off in different ways—through failure, rejection, depression, or guilt. We may assume we’re beyond repair or unworthy of love. But this passage assures us that God’s mercy outweighs our mistakes. His compassion always has the final say.
If you’re in a hard season, don’t lose heart. God’s mercy is already reaching for you. Hold on to hope—He will not cast off forever.
