Constants and Variables

Isaiah 51:6

Lift up your eyes to the heavens, And look on the earth beneath. For the heavens will vanish away like smoke, The earth will grow old like a garment,…

Our focus today is on the first part of Isaiah 51:6 and not the whole scripture. however, this part displays profound truth.

Let us lift up our eyes and look at the vast heavens and then after a while let us look at the earth beneath. What do they signify? Both appear firm and fixed. Since our childhood, we have seen them and there seems to be no apparent tendency to dissolution and decay in them.

Now let us think about the things, people, opportunities, or privileges that we believe are firm and fixed in our lives. Maybe we have been blessed with these since the time we know. We think they are constant. However, God here reminds us otherwise.

For the heavens shall vanish away – the Hebrew word for it is mâlach, which means “to glide away, to disappear“. The idea here is, that the heavens would disappear, as smoke is dissipated and disappears in the air.

The earth will grow old like a garment – Like how clothes when old is quick to wear and tear so shall earth decay, and be destroyed. The idea of the vanishing, or the disappearing of the heavens and the earth, is one that often occurs in the Scriptures ( Isaiah 34:4; Psalms 102:26; Hebrews 1:11-12; 2 Peter 3:10-12).

Let us edify ourselves today through this portion of scripture, nothing around us is constant. They are all variables except God, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is the rock on whom we stand, all other ground is sinking sand. May our Hope and Trust be on Him alone.

Blessed Day Ahead.
