Psalm 1:3
He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.
Psalm 1 is a familiar psalm that portrays a believer as a fruitful tree nourished by rivers of water. Its core message is that faithfulness to God leads to fruitfulness that honours Him.
Like a tree planted by water, we draw continual strength and life from God through His Word, the source of our nourishment. This means we abide in Christ, delight in His Word, and meditate on it through every season of life. We neither delight in sin nor follow worldly standards (Psalm 1:1–2), but remain faithful to His Word, making it our way of life.
Being faithful to God is not a vain exercise; it carries precious promises. We will bear fruit in every season, even amid trials and challenges. Though everything around us may turn dry, our leaves will not wither. They display to the world that we are alive and joyful in Him. The Lord will bless the work of our hands, and we will prosper. Prosperity doesn’t mean immunity from trials, failure, or difficulties. It means bearing fruit that honours God regardless of our circumstances. Joseph prospered even when he had nothing – as a slave and as an unjustly imprisoned man (Genesis 39:2, 23).
Let’s be careful not to become tumbleweed believers who drift aimlessly in the winds of life. Instead, let’s be like mighty cedars with deep and strong roots. Though life can be difficult, we can endure hardships by relying on God’s strength. Then, we’ll grow resilient and strong, bringing glory to God.
This Lenten season, let us become His well-watered garden – strong in times of crisis and able to share our shade and fruit with others in need.
