1 Peter 5:6

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God that He may exalt you in due time.

The apostle Peter experienced a significant transformation as a disciple of our humble Savior. He was an ordinary fisherman on the Sea of Galilee but became a devoted follower of the Messiah. Throughout his discipleship journey, he witnessed astonishing miracles and even walked on water. Yet, despite his close relationship with the Lord, Peter denied his beloved Savior before the authorities. Still, Jesus did not forsake him. Instead, He restored Peter, empowered him with the Holy Spirit, and called him to greater things for God’s glory.

Peter witnessed Christ’s meekness; though Jesus humbled Himself and served others as a servant, God the Father ultimately exalted Him and gave Him the name above every name (Philippians 2:8–9). At one point, Peter boldly declared to the other disciples that he was ready to face imprisonment or death for the true King. However, Jesus foretold Peter’s denial, reminding him that he would falter (Luke 22:31–34).

Like Peter, sometimes we can become overconfident in our relationship with God because of our experiences, convincing ourselves that we would never turn away from Him. This confidence can easily lead to pride in our own righteousness. When we exalt ourselves, pride takes over, leading to failure and distancing us from God’s presence. God resists the proud (James 4:6). Lucifer also exalted himself above God (Isaiah 14:12–15) and was ultimately brought low.

Let us strive to follow Peter’s example by embracing repentance and returning to God (Luke 22:62). God fights for the humble and will lift them in due time. Take comfort in knowing that as you walk in humility, God is with you, ready to strengthen, support, and exalt you at His appointed time.
