God Rewards Perseverance

James 1:12

Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

James was writing to a community that faced various threats and persecutions from every side. In today’s verse, he encourages followers of Christ to persevere in faith when they encounter trials and temptations because they have the hope of a future reward. Those who truly love the Lord remain loyal to Him even when going through a testing of their faith. And God rewards them with the crown of life.

The word “blessed” is similar to what we find in the Beatitudes that Jesus taught (Matthew 5:3-12). It implies God’s special favour on His people – a blessing that is both physical and spiritual in nature. Those who endure trials and persevere in faith receive God’s blessing and His eternal reward.

The “crown” could refer to a victory wreath given to competition winners or a royal headpiece that signifies honour. Those who endure will receive the crown that is life itself. Their reward is eternal life – an inheritance in the kingdom of God.

Do you feel like you’re going through a season that’s testing your faith and loyalty to the Lord? It is just stretching your perception of God’s goodness and deepening your trust in His ability to look after you. Continue pursuing intimacy with God and remain committed to accomplishing His purpose in your life. God Himself will give you the strength to persevere in faith until you see the fulfilment of His promises in your life.
