Godly Obedience

Ephesians 6:1-2 – “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother,’ which is the first commandment with promise:”

God has always positioned the relationship between a father and a child above all else. In fact, He calls us His children and has allowed us to call Him our Heavenly Father. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that one of the most important commandments, given by our Father in Heaven to Moses in the Old Testament, is to honor our parents. This is the first commandment that has a promise attached to it. The promise is, “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

A parent and child relationship can be considered to be an allegory of the relationship between God and His children. Just like our Lord always knows what is best for us, and He brings us up responsibly, similarly, parents also play the same role towards their children on earth. Hence, honouring our parents is not an option but a mandate. Honouring our parents is not only pleasing to God but it also has an unswerving reward – the reward of prosperity and long life. The goodness of God can only be experienced when we walk in godly obedience. The question is, are we ready to receive the promises of God in our life by being obedient children of God?
