Growth in Obedience

Deuteronomy 28:13 “The Lord will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the Lord your God.”

In this verse, we read about a promise of divine elevation for those who faithfully follow the commandments of the Lord, with obedience and love. God assures His children, us, that we will position ourselves as leaders rather than followers if we obediently adhere to His instructions.

The imagery of being the head and not the tail signifies a position of authority, influence, and honour. God’s promise is clear: those who prioritize obedience to His commandments will be exalted above their circumstances, never relegated to a position of inferiority.

This promise depends on obedience— our willingness to align our life with God’s will and follow His instructions. As believers, we are reminded that our elevation in life isn’t determined by our efforts alone but by our steadfast obedience to God’s commands.

And as the children of God’s new covenant through Jesus, it is not the checklist of the 613 laws that we have to follow but it is the one commandment above all those laws. As Romans 12:8-10 says, Love is the fulfilment of all the laws; Love God and Love one another just as you love yourself.

As we commit ourselves to obedience, may we trust in God’s promise to exalt us, positioning us as leaders and influencers in His kingdom. In obedience to love, we will encounter true success in the sight of God with honour, love, and humility.
