Heaven Bound – Eternal Life!

“Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. – John 5:24 NIV

John records Jesus’ promise that those who hear His word and believe have eternal life. Our eternal destiny hinges on whether one truly listens to the truth of God’s word. Here is a summary of the keywords in this verse.

1. “Very truly,”
   Everything the Lord Jesus Christ says is true. The word very truly amplifies the importance of the statement.
2. “Whoever hears my word and believes….”
   Righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. (Romans 3:22). We are saved by hearing and believing in the truth of the gospel of Christ (Rom 10:17). Eternal life is a promise to all those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.
3. “him who sent me….”
   Jesus said, “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me” (John 6:38). When Jesus was praying to the Father in anticipation of His upcoming death and suffering on the Cross, He uttered the words, “Not as I will, but as You will” (Matthew 26:39). The Father’s will was for Jesus to die for our sins, and Jesus fulfilled His Father’s will by reconciling us to God (John 19:30).
4. “…has eternal life and will not be judged….”
   The judgment at Calvary is the only judgment for sin that we as children of God will ever face. We are acquitted of our sins because Jesus Christ paid the price of our sin on the Cross. Our sins are forgiven, and our debts are paid because of our Lord Jesus Christ.
5. “…but has crossed over from death to life.”
   For those who believe in the word of God and have a daily walk with the Lord, the promise is eternal life with our Heavenly Father.
   

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the way you made for our sins to be forgiven and the provision of eternal life. Thank you that we can live a life of joy and peace on earth. In Jesus Name, Amen
