Bread for and of Life?

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35 (NIV)

Most of us have tasted Bread. Every culture has its unique version of bread, and it makes up a significant part of people’s daily diet worldwide. The bread symbolizes the provision for our basic needs. The association of Jesus Christ and bread is to remind us that He meets our basic needs.

At the beginning of this chapter, we read about one of the fantastic miracles our Lord Jesus Christ performed. Him feeding the hungry 5000+ by breaking the five loaves of bread and two fish and providing enough for 12 baskets of leftover. Our Lord Jesus Christ uses the miracle to teach us that salvation is a gift. We could not ever deserve it, no matter how much ‘works’ we tried to do. We have to believe and receive him by faith into our hearts to have abundant life.

Later in the same chapter, Our Lord Jesus Christ refers to himself as the “Bread of Life. The Lord Jesus knows our physical and spiritual hungering. He is the only one who can satisfy the deep spiritual longings of our souls. Jesus Christ is Our Daily Bread, the Bread from Heaven. When we receive the Lord Jesus Christ into our life, He gives us a new spiritual life. He nourishes our souls with His comforting presence and His Word. The bread of life is here to satisfy our life’s hunger.

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you, Lord Jesus Christ, for the strength you give us to meet obstacles and heartaches. The peace you give us for ongoing trials, and the courage to move forward even amid uncertain situations. Thank you for providing for us daily.
In Jesus name, Amen.
