Listen and Lean

Proverbs 16:20

He who heeds the word wisely will find good, and whoever trusts in the Lord, happy is he.

Solomon draws a straight line between two choices: how we respond to instruction and where we place our confidence. Wisdom isn’t just knowledge stored away – it’s knowledge acted upon. And trust isn’t a feeling that we wait for – it’s a decision we make before we can see the outcome. This proverb promises fruit for both: good for the one who listens well, and happiness for the one who leans on God rather than himself.

Daniel is a striking example. Taken captive to Babylon as a young man, he was surrounded by a culture and a king that had no regard for God’s ways. He could have blended in quietly to survive. Instead, he purposed in his heart not to compromise, even in something as small as the food he ate (Daniel 1:8).

Later, when faced with a death sentence for praying to God, he didn’t abandon his convictions – he trusted the Lord and kept praying as he always had (Daniel 6:10). God shut the mouths of the lions that night. Daniel heeded wisdom in small things and trusted God in terrifying things, and both paths led to favor and preservation.

This proverb isn’t only about crisis moments. It’s about the daily posture of a heart willing to listen and lean. Many of our struggles come not from lack of information, but from a refusal to trust what we already know is right.

Is there an area where you know what wisdom requires, but fear is holding you back? Take one step today – heed the Word, and trust fully in the Lord. Let Him carry what you cannot control.
