Psalm 103:17
But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children’s children.
Most of us wonder if our faith matters beyond our lifetime. Do quiet, unseen choices to follow God truly last?
This verse answers with a promise. God’s mercy is not limited to our brief years on earth. It reaches backward before we existed. It also extends forward long after we are gone. His mercy rests on those who fear Him, reaching even to their children’s children.
Earlier in Psalm 103, David reminds us how brief our lives are. We are like grass or a flower that is here today and gone tomorrow (Psalm 103:15). Set beside that fragility, God’s eternal mercy feels even more striking. We are passing, but He is not. His unending mercy attaches itself to our short lives and continues beyond us.
Ruth gives us a powerful picture of this truth. She was a widowed Moabite woman with no inheritance and no clear future. Yet, she chose to cling to Naomi and to Naomi’s God (Ruth 1:16). She could not know where her faithfulness would lead. Still, her choice placed her in the lineage of King David and Jesus Himself (Matthew 1:5). One woman’s quiet loyalty echoed for generations she never lived to see.
Our reverence for God is never wasted, even when we cannot trace the outcome. You may not see how your faithfulness today shapes future generations. Walk in the fear of the Lord anyway. Trust that your obedience sets in motion a mercy that outlives you.
