Revelation 3:20
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.
The Book of Revelation contains Christ’s messages to believers, calling them back to intimacy, faithfulness, and spiritual alertness. In today’s verse, Jesus lovingly invites those who are spiritually distant to hear His voice and restore their fellowship with Him.
Revelation 3:20 is often pictured as Jesus standing outside a door, knocking gently. But the verse begins with something important: “If anyone hears My voice…” Before the door opens, the voice must first be recognized.
In the Bible, a ‘door’ often represents the heart, access, surrender, and personal fellowship with God. Many people want direction from God, but struggle to hear Him because life is constantly noisy. Deadlines, social media, stress, entertainment, and worry can easily drown out His voice.
So how can we practically hear God’s voice? Sometimes it begins with simple habits: spending quiet time in prayer before checking the phone, reading Scripture consistently, worshipping without distraction, journaling during devotion time, or learning to pause and reflect before making decisions. God often speaks gently through His Word, conviction, peace, wisdom, and spiritual prompting.
Zacchaeus is a beautiful example. Although surrounded by crowds, he intentionally positioned himself by climbing a tree, just to see Jesus. Because his heart was open and seeking, he recognized Jesus when others missed Him. When Jesus called him, Zacchaeus responded immediately and welcomed Him joyfully into his home. He did not delay or stay in his comfort zone.
Sometimes hearing God’s knock is less about volume and more about attentiveness. The question is not whether God is speaking; the question is whether we are making room to listen.
