Lamentations 3:24

The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I hope in Him!

The book of Lamentations is a collection of poetic laments expressing grief and sorrow over the fall of Jerusalem. The author, traditionally believed to be the prophet Jeremiah, mourns the destruction of the city and the suffering of its people. Yet, in the midst of this despair, he declares a profound truth that offers hope and comfort to every generation.

In biblical times, a portion often referred to one’s inheritance or share of provision. Jeremiah understood that even when earthly security, possessions, and comforts were lost, God Himself remained his greatest treasure. Everything around him had changed, but God had not. Though Jerusalem lay in ruins and the future seemed uncertain, Jeremiah found confidence in the unchanging nature of God.

Today, we often place our hope in careers, relationships, finances, achievements, and possessions. While these are blessings from God to be enjoyed, they are not meant to be the source of our ultimate security. Jobs change, markets fluctuate, people sometimes let us down, and plans do not always unfold the way we expect. When our hope is built solely on temporary things, disappointment and discouragement can quickly follow.

Lamentations 3:24 reminds us that our deepest security is found in God alone. When the Lord is our portion, we possess something that cannot be taken away by circumstances or changed by the uncertainties of life. His love remains constant, His promises stand firm, and His presence sustains us through every season.

Today, if you are facing uncertainty or disappointment, remember that your hope does not depend on your circumstances. It rests in the unchanging character of God. He is enough for every need, every challenge, and every tomorrow.
