Our Identity in God

Romans 8:16

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

In Romans 8, Paul precisely describes the great work our God does in us through the Holy Spirit and our identity in Jesus Christ after we receive him through faith. In Romans 8:15, Paul talks about how we call out to God as “Abba” or “Father” and God embraces us into His family and listens to our prayerful hearts.

The scripture states that God, the Holy Spirit, communicates to us because we are His children. His spirit “bears witness”, and keeps interacting with us over and over since we are now in Christ, and He defines who we are.

Paul reveals our identity in Christ. We are no longer bound to slavery, depression, and inadequacy. Indeed, we owe nothing to our old lives in the flesh. That is not who we are any longer. We are His new creation and His children, led by God’s Spirit.

We need to be confident and firm in faith in all aspects of our lives because we belong to God and are part of His family now. God has blessed everyone uniquely through His spirit, so we glorify and honor Him in all ways. We did not receive the Holy Spirit based on our goodness or efforts but through our faith in Him. He is God who loves us unconditionally.
