The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him. Psalm 28:7 (KJV)
King David, the writer of this Psalm, declares confidently in this verse that the Lord is his strength and protection. David had no rest, his enemies and his smooth-talking backstabbing friends distressed him intensely.
This mighty man of war understood the importance of strength and protection during life’s uncertainties. Amid his deep distress, David confidently identifies his source of deliverance and comfort as the Lord.
King David’s principle behind his confidence is that ‘Faith comes before deliverance’. David expresses his faith in declaring that ‘The Lord is his strength and his shield’ – God’s strength to stand strong during troubled times, and God as a shield to protect during uncertainties. David trusted that his life is in God’s hands, He rested knowing that ‘All things work for the good of those who love God, who have been called according to God’s purpose’. As a result, he received his deliverance and exalts the Lord in songs of praise.
Let’s apply what we learn from King David’s life. Despite all the difficult circumstances life may bring us, we should trust and confidently expect that the Lord will help and deliver us. In counting our blessings and remembering our past victories, we will encourage ourselves in the Lord and trust in His ability to sustain us in the present and the future.
Our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is where we find our strength and protection. Let’s learn from the life of King David. When we trust the Lord Jesus Christ, we will never put to shame (Psalm 25:3)
