Psalm 118:16
The right hand of the LORD is exalted; The right hand of the LORD does valiantly.
‘Right-hand man’ signifies the indispensable and invaluable assistant who one can trust and depend on. One of the possible derivations of this phrase could be biblical since Jesus Christ is mentioned to be seated at the Right Hand of God. Here, the right hand is symbolic of position, authority and power, manifested in Christ, Himself.
Let’s focus on the three main meanings of this phrase. The first is ‘promise’. The elders in the olden times would pronounce a blessing over the next generations with their right hand. In Genesis 48:14, we read Israel reached out his right hand and placed it on Ephraim’s head, giving him precedence and the birthright blessing. The Lord has promised us in Isaiah 41:10, “fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
The second is ‘provision.’ We read in Psalm 16:11, ‘He makes known to me the path of life; He will fill me with joy in His presence, with eternal pleasures at His right Hand’. Everything we need, the decisions that we make, the choices, etc., can be God-led. If we seek the Lord and His will, the result will be joy and pleasure.
The third is ‘protection.’ Exodus 15:6 says, ‘Your right hand, Lord, was majestic in power. Your right hand, Lord, shattered the enemy.’ What have we to fear when the Lord Himself stands beside us!
