Search Us, O Lord

Proverbs 20:27

“The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart.”

The light of the Lord penetrates the born-again human spirit. This is why today’s scripture refers to the God-breathed spirit of man as the “lamp of the Lord”. It searches the depth of our innermost being and exposes our feelings, our desires, our motives, and our thoughts. 1 Corinthians 2:11 (NIV) says, “For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them?” There is nothing we can hide from the spirit of the new creation in Christ.

Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV) says, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” The follower of the Lord Jesus must actively engage in this process—be searched and led in God’s ways. It is essential for living a holy and repentant life.

Was this scripture meant to condemn our sinful thoughts, broken dreams, and unforgiven wounds? Absolutely not! Our Heavenly Father paid the most precious price to reconcile us to Him. He pursues us. He loves us. And He continues to heal, save, restore, renew, and guide our battered, bruised, broken, and wayward souls and spirits.

Let nothing come in the way of God’s goodness and mercy that follows us all the days of our lives. Let’s allow the Holy Spirit and the lamp of the Lord to help us walk in the fullness of all that the Lord Jesus purposed for us. How wonderful that we have the lamp of the Lord to illumine our lives and lead us!
