Servant of the Lord

Luke 1:38 – “And Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.’ And the angel departed from her.”

Mary was just another Jewish teenager, eagerly looking forward to getting married and starting her own family. She was perhaps polishing up her cooking skills, or getting her bridal trousseau ready when an angel suddenly appeared. And to make things even weirder, the angel claimed she was going to give birth to the Son of God. Mary was probably perplexed, but God must’ve calmed her anxious heart. Because her response was, “I am the Lord’s servant… May it be to me according to His will.”

God asks those He loves to do difficult things. What is our response? Can we like Mary say, “Have your way in me, Lord?” Will we respond like Jesus did on the eve of His crucifixion, “Not my will but Yours be done?” God will not ask us to do something without His power and love to strengthen us. Can we take Him at His Word and accept His will in our lives, no matter how difficult it may be?

Prayer: Lord, we want to be obedient to Your will in our lives. Help us trust You through thick and thin. Empower our faith that we may walk confidently in the path You have marked out for us.
