Proverbs 17:17
A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
David’s life gives us a powerful picture of what Proverbs 17:17 means. David knew what it was like to have friends in good times, but he also discovered who would remain when adversity came.
When David became a fugitive, King Saul pursued him with the intent to kill him. David had every reason to feel afraid and alone. Yet Jonathan, Saul’s son, did not abandon him. Jonathan loved David and strengthened him in God. He stood with David even when doing so could cost him his relationship with his own father. Jonathan could have chosen comfort and distance. Instead, he chose loyalty.
But Jonathan’s friendship was not simply about encouraging David. Jonathan pointed David back to God. In 1 Samuel 23:16, Jonathan went to David and “strengthened his hand in God”. He reminded David that God had a purpose for his life and would remain faithful to His promises.
This verse reminds us that God often shows His faithfulness through the people He places around us. Jonathan could not remove David’s danger or change Saul’s heart, but he could remind David that God had not forgotten him.
In the same way, God may not always remove our adversity immediately, but He never leaves us to face it alone. He becomes our refuge when we are afraid, our strength when we are weak, and our faithful friend when we feel lonely.
David had Jonathan, but ultimately, David’s hope rested in God. And that is the heart of this verse: good friends are a gift from God, but God Himself remains our greatest source of strength through every adversity.
Prayer: Lord, help me to trust You in every difficult season, and use me to strengthen others in You. Amen.
